Working in the Oil Industry

You should realize that there is a great difference between Offshore Activities from those of a normal workplace. Health risks are greater in offshore drilling and, in fact, it is more difficult to improve working conditions offshore than on mainland.

Working in oil fields is like nothing you have ever experienced before! It is like a construction job except instead of constructing something, your job is to make a hole in the earth's crust. Rigs work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The only time they shut down operations is during bad weather, when they experience equipment failure, or make a rig move. Of course, for some other positions such as Administrative & Catering personnel you will not be that exposed to the elements of the nature since most of your working time is spent inside the facilities.

Drilling rigs are located worldwide, including the Eastern Coast of Canada, Eastern Europe, the Far East, the Gulf of Mexico, Latin America, the Mediterranean, the Middle East, the North Sea, the Pacific Rim, Southern Asia and West Africa. Each of these rigs has a crew of nationals and expats (expatriates) working on them. The turnover rate in this industry is big, probably more so than any other industry. That’s why companies like to have lots of personnel on file, in case there are crew shortages (which there are a lot of). When asking people who work offshore most of them say that they love their jobs even though sometimes it’s a tough job. They consider themselves very lucky to have started in this industry and what most of them value with the job is they are well-paid and they have a lot of free time.

The Rig Organization
Each drilling derrick (some rigs have two derricks) has two crews which work on a 12 hours basis and relieve each other. A crew has the compositition previously mentioned and may sum a total of 25/50 persons, depending on the facility. Apart from the two crews, there is also a lot of personnel onboard the rig, but not all of them may live on the rig itself. The total work force on an offshore oil platform can vary from 100 persons to up to 1,000 under special projects.
Each oil field has a special main contractor (a large oil company). Sometimes this contractor may hire someone else (a sub-contractor) for specific operations such as drilling, pipe laying, catering, diving personnel and equipment, technical support, communications and others.
